Identity describes the values and attitudes of who you are. You may express yourself through your beliefs, values, abilities and behaviour. Your identity can be formed by your culture or environment. However, you are more than just an external projection- you are more than what you do.
Your identity is completely interchangeable- so long as you have the will to change. Using the practice of NLP is one of the best methods to understand identity, and you can make changes to yourself image using the principles of NLP.
One of the benefits of NLP techniques is that it can encourage all the healthy parts of you to grow and the less savoury parts to whither on the vine. It can improve our general well being and make us more harmonious inside. All of our emotional processes, our attitudes and values , our beliefs and motivations and identities are interconnected.
NLP avoids labelling people as this or that, instead it focuses on behaviour and identity as two separate things. So, just because someone acts bad, it is pertinent not to tar the same group of individuals with the same brush. If you have acted badly in the past, you are not necessarily a bad person for ever. You may have wished you were doing something different at the time.
Positive self-management focuses on addressing the issue rather than the person. If you want to change an aspect of your identity, then be specific. To be constructive with your argument’s, is the best way to address your issues.
Any issues with identity need to be looked at in precise detail. So, rather than saying things like , ‘I’m just awful’, focus on giving specific criticism of a specific aspect of your personality. You see the mistake that is being made here is that the individual is personalising the difficulty.
Rather than seeing it as a separate obstacle to overcome, the difficulty is internalised as part of the individual.
Sometimes, we need to look outside the box when we look at ourselves. See the bigger picture by taking a step back. Being self aware is the key to this.
If you lack self awareness, or want to test yourself if you think you have it in spades, think for a while about how and why you tend to act in certain ways. Think about the healthy and unhealthy aspects of your behaviour and what changes you would make to them.
Securing you identity is a process of self-awareness and attainment. A greater awareness of self is a valuable insight in any journey of personal development. Too often people try to find fault in others when changing themselves would be a better starting point.
Developing a heightened sense of self-awareness through introspection and honest self appraisal is one of the single most important things you can do in your life.
Conquering your identity fears rests, to a large extent, on how honestly you know yourself.
Going beyond your face-value identity connects you to the bigger picture of your own purpose, ethics, values and motivations in life. It will take you above and beyond the superficial and in to the spiritual.
If you have a business, you can apply the same principles here too. You can go beyond looking at your organisation in simple terms.
As we approach different life stages, it is common to question what we are doing with our lives. Sometimes this will be triggered by a specific event or circumstance.
Asking purposeful questions is the key to self-enlightenment. You can address any issues you have with yourself if you ask the right questions.
For instance , many people equate their job with identity – “I’m a policeman” or “She is a businesswomen”. It is often the case that asking the right question is about questioning your occupation and current living arrangements.
To what extent does your job mirror your core values, match your skills and provide you with the opportunity for growth. Do you feel challenged enough by what you do?
Where do you see yourself in five years time? All good questions, and all need a patient and honest approach to answering.
You may, for instance, feel like you are coasting along at work at the moment. If this is the case, you may want to find something that is better suited to your core identity.
