When mapping out your goal, having a clear and preferred set of options is the first step you need to think about when you come to choosing on your goal. If you have already taken the time to choose a small goal; decide on a plan of action; then take the first steps, congratulations!
However, now is the time to start thinking in the long term. The problem with any long tern goal is that fact that it is ‘long term’. It is very difficult to maintain motivation if we are unable to enjoy the fruits of our labour once in a while.
Making a start to as soon as possible is the key to kick starting your goal campaign and gaining momentum. But you also want to think about setting milestones, now. Consider your milestones to be your goal stopping off points where you can celebrate your success so far.
You can think of these milestones as party points, where you recharge your batteries and refresh yourself anew to tackle your life goals and make sure that you are still going in the right direction.
I will give you an example of how you set a milestone from the experiences of a lady called Nicola. During the course of Nicolas 10 month programme she set herself alternate milestones every 6 weeks for her fitness programme.
Every 12 weeks she was able to see a big result in her waistline and fitness levels. The period of time between milestones worked well for her because she felt that she was never that far away from an opportunity to monitor and celebrate her progress and because the big changes were so motivating.
The secret to setting milestones and goal attainment is through taking small steps. You must resist the temptation to race towards you whole life goals and try to achieve them as quickly as possible. Sometimes that’s the right approach and gain lots of momentum. However, most people find that lasting change comes about through small, incremental changes to your goal.
There are lots of advantages to taking this approach. You can fit your goals into the rest of your life without sacrificing other things that are important to you. You can also be flexible in your behaviour by making small and significant adjustments to your goal route along the way. This stops you from having to do a rapid U-turn if something does not turn out as well as you wanted.
Milestones also make the journey more rewarding because you have time to celebrate your rewards and celebrations. Having rewards along the way makes achieving the goal that extra bit fun which is great for boosting your self esteem. Milestones also build habits the stay with you for much longer and become part of who you are, making the change much easier to sustain over the course of your life.
Milestones also help to reduce our stress levels that can have an undesirable impact on our lives. You are also more likely to sustain your progress because you are not behaving in a an extremely long term frame of mind. Nicola maintained here results from taking baby steps rather than racing ahead- her slow weight loss was better for her body’s health overall.
Getting fast results can have obvious benefits, but you need to consider the consequences. You need to consider what is the most health option, and I’m not just talking physically here. Making sudden changes can have a detrimental effect on our mental health. There is a delicate bargain that needs to be struck between expediency and long term focus.
You don’t have to scale mountains or run across deserts to have a successful goal. Your final milestone should just represent the culmination of all of your past achievement. Your unique goal programme lies in living your life with your own sense of integrity in the way that you want to live.
That may mean huge goals or small adjustments, yet the courage and commitment you need to do either is exactly the same. Each milestone you set is like a mini promise to yourself. Each time you reach a milestone you have tangible proof of your achievements thus far. Remember, to always reach the standards you deserve from yourself.
