Few things resonate in our mind with as much intensity as worrying about money problems. Most money problems are not caused by not having a yacht or a Porsche, but by the more mundane priorities of everyday living such as paying the bills, having enough for a small holiday and paying the mortgage/ rent.
Recent events in the world economy have compounded the financial stresses for many people.
The biggest problem with financial difficulty is the way it takes control away from you. Feeling powerless is one of the most horrible sensations an individual can experience. It is sad that so many people, even in developed countries, live in impoverished conditions.
Coping with financial difficulty can involve making painful sacrifices, it can make us feel inadequate as parents, it can leave us bitter and angry with the world and the government. Coping with financial difficulty is, therefore, coping with various different pressures, sensations and emotions.
The credit crunch can bring about very significant life changes, such as losing a job or losing a home. Losing your job can affect your self-esteem and financial circumstances, which in turn can trigger emotional distress.
When you've been made redundant or you're struggling with debt, feeling low or anxious is a normal response. Fear of redundancy can also lead to worry, which is a very common human emotion.
You may be feeling, behaving or thinking in ways that are unfamiliar. This doesn't necessarily mean you're suffering from depression or an anxiety disorder.
There are ways to cope with financial difficulty to lessen the impact of its effects upon us. If you are currently worried like so many people are about money, do not give up hope or on believing in yourself.
Remember that there are millions in the same boat as you and you are strong enough to come through it.
One of the best things you can do is to keep living life as fully as possible. Even if you are made redundant and currently surviving on benefits, keep yourself going as much as possible.
Stay active as much as possible to lessen the amount of time you spend dwelling on your predicament. A solution is more likely to come to a positive mind than one that is dwelling negatively on what is wrong with the world.
It might sound easy to say but never stop being active. When life is at its toughest is when you can feel proudest for getting through it. Many of the most successful people have had to experience the low points to get the strength of character to make success of themselves.
Being more active means not withdrawing from life. Keep seeing your friends; keep your CV up-to-date; don't ignore the bills and try to keep paying them.
If you have more time because you’re not at work, take up some type of exercise. It can improve your mood if you’re feeling low. Go to your local sports center and find exercise classes and sports clubs close to where you live.
Keeping an active routine is very important. A routine will enable you to make your active lifestyle a habit. When we are stressed or unemployed we can get into negative routines such as sleeping in late, watching TV all day or not taking pride in our appearance. Staying strong and optimistic will keep you feeling well even when it seems there is nothing to feel good about.
When people feel down, they sometimes forget about the things they like doing. If you don’t have to go to work in the morning, you can get into a poor sleep routine, lying in bed until late or watching TV all day.
If you used to go to the shops on Thursday nights, keep going to the shops on Thursday nights. If you did sport before, continue doing sport. Get up at your normal time and stick to your routine.
If you lose your routine, it can also affect your eating. You may stop cooking, you may eat snacks instead of having proper meals, or you may miss breakfast because you’re still in bed.
Of course, if you are suffering from severe emotional distress, help is at hand through your local doctor and other professionals. Local government agencies can also offer you advice on how to reduce your monthly outgoings.
